A Finicky Fur Friend and a Lesson in Patience

This week, I’m house-sitting for a coworker. It’s not my first rodeo—I’ve done this many times, and honestly, I don’t mind. A change of scenery is always nice, and their home feels like a mini retreat. Plus, I get to spend time with their two dogs. They’re adorable in their own ways, but one of them? Oh, he’s a diva.

Let me tell you about breakfast this morning. The finicky one (let’s call him Sir Snubs-a-Lot) has a menu most people would envy—home-cooked meals prepared with care. I served him his breakfast, expecting a happy tail wag. Instead, he fixed me with a look that screamed, “You expect me to eat this?”

It was the kind of judgment that instantly reminded me of Mommy Dearest. You know, that scene where Joan Crawford forces her daughter to sit at the table with the rare steak? Yeah, it was like that, minus the Hollywood drama (well, mostly). Sir Snubs-a-Lot sniffed his bowl, gave me the side-eye, and turned away as if I’d offered him gruel.

I tried coaxing him. Nothing. Bargaining internally? Guilty. “Maybe if I toss in some ice cream, he’ll eat,” I thought. But no, I held my ground. Eventually, after what felt like an eternity of doggy protest, he finally ate. I couldn’t decide if I was relieved or offended.

But as I watched him finish, I realized he had taught me a tiny lesson: patience. Sometimes, things in life don’t happen on our timetable, and sometimes we’re just like Sir Snubs-a-Lot—hesitant to embrace what’s good for us because we’re holding out for something "better."

So, here’s to embracing the simple things, even when they don’t come with sprinkles or ice cream. And here’s to Sir Snubs-a-Lot for keeping life interesting. Dinner’s going to be a whole other story, I’m sure.

Until then,

A day in the life of Ramona Louise
